Can a band or artist record music at home and enjoy a hit? Absolutely! It might be an evident answer nowadays, with artists such as Avicii and Drake working in their bedrooms and hotels and producing massive hits.

It doesn’t matter if you want to produce the music yourself or use help from experts; it is the minute attention to the details that will make the music production process a success.

If you’re producing the song yourself, here are the five essential steps you should follow:

Songwriting:

Pen down your hook or melody and all your musical ideas. Try to come up with unique lyric ideas. These don’t need to be extremely intelligent or profound, just memorable and exciting.

Arrangement:

The second step to record music involves organizing the sections of the song into chorus, verse, etc. Make your songs with genre-appropriate track ideas. Utilize different instruments to make the track sound more engaging throughout the varied sections. The virtual synths and instruments are fantastic for artists who have a low budget. Those who love playing live instruments should use a suitable audio interface and mic or a music recording studio.

Vocals:

Though vocals are part of arrangement technically, they should be considered a separate step due to their significance in music production. You must spend decent time on vocals and ensure that you have a good lead vocal in the entire track. Each line of the lyrics you write is crucial. Moreover, also make sure to double the vocal line at certain spots to emphasize significant sections. Again, utilize a suitable audio interface and a good mic in peaceful, acoustically treated surroundings.

If you don’t have access to any of these facilities, check with a few nearby local music recording studios to get the vocals right.

Mix:

It is critical to eliminate the panning and rough levels before you start mixing. If it is in your mind, you can possibly add a few effects for giving the mixer a fair idea of what you want sonically.

Note: If you mix the music album yourself, you must have a good monitoring environment and quality speakers (monitors).

It takes time and experience to mix well. If you have been practising it for some time, then you indeed have a significant advantage. But if not, then hiring an overpriced mastering professional to save final fixes may offer the best results.

Mastering:

Mastering is the last and most crucial step to record music. With several mastering tools readily available in the market these days, getting a good master for home use is possible now.

There are numerous amazing metering limiters, tools, etc. But still, those following the DIY method should be extremely careful, especially if they are having issues with the bass not being up to the mark or a lot of muddiness in the guitar or synths. Using good plugins might clear a few of these issues; however, you would damage the entire track’s sonic integrity.

If the master sounds just perfectly loud and mix sounds excellent still, your work is done! But if the master sounds funny or does not compete with identical songs sonically in your niche, then sadly, you will have to again head back to the fourth step.

Is mastering necessary for all tracks?

Years ago, all the studio recordings that were produced for sale were mastered.

However, as several amateur recordings are done for different purposes, the home studios often will do mastering themselves or just skip it altogether. And that is absolutely fine. For example, if you share your track with only friends and family, it obviously wouldn’t matter. But if you intend to record music professionally or just want your music to sound good, then mastering is a must.

Hopefully, this blog might have made the process of producing music easier for you to understand and initiate. Good luck creating tracks!
